How Pogglers came about

How Pogglers came about

I am Mairi Rivers, wife of Dene and proud mother of three young children who we home school.

I really didn't take to sewing at school, but when art college beckoned I discovered whacky fabrics (they were cheap!) and started making clothes for myself. Since then my trusty sewing machine has stayed with me and I have a growing collection of knitting needles. When my second daughter was born I knitted my eldest a rabbit as a present from the new baby. When my third was born I made a doll each for the girls and decided that this was something I wanted to carry on doing for other people.

We started eating organic food before the children were born and the natural progression was to start buying organic clothes and then organic toys for the children. I found organic toys really difficult to find and things like dressing up clothes and bags almost impossible to source. So I managed to find an organic cotton wholesale supplier and started developing a range of dressing up clothes myself.

I have created Pogglers to bring some of the things that I and my family love to more people like you. I make many of the products myself, with an aim to use as many natural, organic and recycled materials as possible. All of our dolls (with the exception of the Indian Doll), the dressing up clothes and the fairies are made by me, while the other products come from a wonderful company whose aim is to create jobs in India. Their profits are used to benefit the rural community of K.V. Kuppam in South India, where the organic Fairtrade certified cloth is woven and sewn into toys and clothes.

We live in Switzerland, but plan to move back to Scotland at some point in the near-ish future.
We speak English, German, Italian and French.

What does Pogglers mean?

Poggle is a family word which means to mess or muck around with something. It is especially done by small chubby fingers belonging to children when they mess about with mucky things. But adults can poggle too.
My children are always poggling in the garden with snails and empty snail shells. Paints are also good to poggle with, especially when the fingers are doing the poggling and squelching the paint around rather than painting with it!
So pogglers are people who poggle.
